According to the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA), Disneyland has plans to lay off 200 actors as the “Frozen: Live at the Hyperion” and “Mickey and the Magical Map” close at Disney California Adventure and Disneyland respectively. Both shows have had several year long runs but will come to an end as Disneyland parks remain closed due to the pandemic.
The two shows have come to an end due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty that remains around the Disneyland parks while they wait on reopening guidelines from the state of California. An AGVA Disneyland representative said in an email to the Orange County Registry that 214 members will be laid off due to the closure of the shows, representing 70% of the AGVA members that were working at Disneyland.
Actors involved in the “Frozen” and “Mickey and the Magical Map” have reportedly received end of run notices in regards to the show’s closures. End of run notices in relation to shows means that they are permanently closed, but they can sometimes be retracted.
Like many live theater productions being closed or cancelled during the pandemic, operating costs may have played a large factor in the closures of the two shows.
