On July 31st Beyoncé dropped her new visual album, Black Is King, on Disney+, marking another important chapter in the marriage of Queen B and the mouse. When it comes to a fashion moment, we can always count on Bey to deliver, and lucky for us, the 90-minute film serves up more than enough looks to inspire us for the rest of 2020.
Featuring outfits from fashion giants Balmain, Valentino, and Burberry to less broadly known talented Black designers from around the globe – there is so much to see here, so let’s dive in! We ranked Beyoncé’s Black Is King outfits and share the film’s top 12 best head-to-toe ensembles.
#1 Layered Perfection
We’d do basically anything for a chance to sport this fabulous multi-colored dress from Greek designer Mary Katrantzou’s Fall 2019 collection. The ruffles, the feathers, the colors…the dress is sheer perfection.
#2 Spotted and Stunning
This custom Kujta & Meri look with Fall 2019 Puppets and Puppets x Poppy Lissiman sunglasses is literally EVERYTHING. No one can rock a thigh-high slit like Beyoncé, but a girl can dream. We’re hoping to see this one make an appearance on the red carpet!
#3 The Queen of Chess
Melissa Simon-Hartman is a London-born fashion who highlights her Trinidadian and Ghanaian heritage influences in her brand, Simon Hartman. In this look from the designer, Beyoncé takes on the role of the black queen chess piece and serves up serious drama. We can’t get enough of the corset!
#4 The Sparkling Head Turner
Like animal prints, crystals also had a major moment throughout Black is King. Our favorite jeweled piece? This stunning custom crystal turban from Laurel DeWitt. We’re not sure if crystal eyebrows are fashion’s next trend, but count us in!
#5 Royal Tea Time
Not one to shy away from a vibrant print, London-based designer Erdem delivered a dreamy floral tea dress for the visual album. We’re looking forward to using this photo as reference the next time our friends say we overdressed for an event (no…such…thing.)
#6 Feathered and Fine
Taking over 70 hours of work to create, this feathered creation by Ashi Studio is the definition of luxe. The elaborate embroidered piece is entirely hand-made. We need some more excuses to work feathers into our wardrobe!
#7 Drenched In Crystal
We almost couldn’t believe our eyes when this glittering fringe dress by Lace by Tanaya’s popped up on the screen. Who knew crystal fringe could become your entire outfit? Tanaya made the dress for Beyoncé a year ago and took to Twitter this week to express her excitement in seeing the creation come to life.
#8 Never Enough Tulle
While this Molly Goddard Daria dress from Fall 2019 may not be entirely practical, but it is insanely iconic. It features a 100-meter tulle hem and layered skirt and is literally a piece of fashion history. The Goddard dress is part of the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
#9 Blinged Bodysuit Moment
We may generally hate animal prints, but this leopard jumpsuit might have just made us a believer. The jacquard leopard cape and needle lace jumpsuit are both custom Valentino Haute Couture. Featuring strass embroidery, the entire look was created for Beyoncé by Valentino Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccilo.
#10 Hollywood Glam
One of the more wearable pieces in the visual album is this gorgeous look from Schiaparelli. We’re getting serious old-school Hollywood glamour here! As a fun bonus this scene feature’s Jay-Z and Bey’’s daughter, Blue Ivy.
#11 Sunshine Yellow
Another incredibly wearable look from Black is king is this stunning custom set from Balmain. The outfit was designed by the brand’s Creative Director, Olivier Roustein. We are obsessed with the drama of these sleeves and gorgeous pleating detail.
#12 Luxe Cow Girl
As high fashion as it gets, Queen B rocked a custom Burberry outfit covered in cow-print and topped it off with a horned headdress. We’re not sure if heels make for the most practical horse riding shoe, but when you’re Beyoncé, screw function! The look was designed by Burberry Chief Creative Officer, Riccardo Tisci.
