This week the news broke that a new Harry Potter TV show is being discussed for HBO Max. Since the first book was published in 1997, the magical world of Harry Potter has encapsulated fans of all ages from around the globe. More than 500 million copies of the books have been sold and Harry Potter is now a household name. The announcement didn’t offer many details on the show other than that it is in “early development” and only “broad ideas” have been discussed at this time. What exactly is this show and what could it be about? Let’s dig in!
It’s impossible to talk about Harry Potter without discussing the author of the books, J.K. Rowling. Rowling was the first person to become a billionaire by writing books, she opened doors for female authors, and has a history of generous philanthropy. Recently, she has had a fall from grace. The once loved author has lost fans and drawn criticism for her use of queer-baiting in the Harry Potter franchise, supporting the casting of Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts franchise amid domestic abuse allegations, and most recently, doubling down on transphobic comments. At the moment it is expected that her input will be part of the show, but it is yet to be determined just how personally and financially tied she will be to the project.
If brought to fruition, this would be a show that streams on HBO’s paid streaming service HBO Max. This isn’t surprising with the popularity of streaming right now. Streaming services are constantly in a battle to create the best original content in order to pull more viewers. Netflix has long been dominant in this area but the other major services (Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+) are gaining ground. Expanding the world of Harry Potter is a top priority for HBO Max and Warner Brothers (who own the Harry Potter rights) and streaming is the perfect platform for this move.
So, what is the show going to be about? That information hasn’t been revealed and HBO Max and Warner Brothers reaffirmed in a statement that “there are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform,” meaning it’s still just an idea or maybe even a rumor, but we can definitely speculate!
Could this new story be focused on the main characters from the book? There is so much more in the books that never made it into the movies, so the material is there. Viewers could follow Hermione’s advocatism in S.P.E.W., learn more about Neville’s back story, and watch as Harry and Ginny’s relationship develops. While this is a possibility, it’s probably unlikely. JK Rowling has been reluctant to revisit the main storyline since finishing the 7th book.
If this new show follows the trends of Harry Potter projects of the past, then it’s likely to focus on a minor detail from the main story such as the focus given to Newt Scmander in the Fantastic Beasts series. If this is the case, we would love to see a focus on the First Wizarding War. A series covering Voldemort’s rise to power and the events of the First Wizarding War would be binge-worthy!
Another story that could be pulled from the original books is the story of the Marauders and of James and Lily. Following how James and Lily became a couple along with High School James, Sirius, Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and Snape could be the perfect mix of romance and drama. Throw in teenage Aunt Petunia who can’t do magic like her muggle-born sister plus a Snape and Lily romance and HBO Max can take our money now! JK Rowling did write an 800-word essay for charity known as The James & Sirius Prequel which gives us hope for this storyline!
Would you watch a teen drama set at Hogwarts? We would! Imagine Elite meets Gossip Girl meets Hogwarts. The show wouldn’t need to have any known characters just the known places. We can see the drama unfolding now at The Three Broomsticks over hot butterbeer. The stress of passing your O.W.L.s, the complexities of teenage relationships, the competition between houses, and the divide between purebloods, mudbloods, and muggleborn would make the perfect setup.
The world of Harry Potter is so expansive that we could go on and on! What do you want the new show to be about? Let us know in the comments!
