A heap of new content is coming to Disney Plus in August, and let’s face it – we’ve already worked our way through last month’s watchlist. We’ve rounded up the complete list of movies and shows making its way to the streaming service and hand-picked a few that are instant “add to queue” worthy! Here are our favorites:
Friday, August 7th: Howard
We’d be lying if we said we didn’t tear up just watching the trailer for this one. Directed by Disney favorite Don Hahn, Howard dives into the untold story of the brilliant lyricist behind “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The film is a gorgeous retelling of the creator’s life, including his heartbreaking battle with AIDS. A rare look into the process of creating the most iconic songs in Disney history, Howard promises to be one of our favorite viewings of the month.
Muppets Now (Ep 102 – 105)
Could we be any more excited about the Muppets Now launch? NOPE! The series debuts in just a few days, and four additional episodes hit the streaming service in August. Muppets Now is an unscripted show featuring three different segments: a game show, a cooking show, and a talk show. This one is guaranteed to serve up a healthy dose of laughs and delicious Muppet hijinks! Catch the first episode on July 31st.
Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge: Adventure Awaits
Premiering on FreeForm last year, Galaxy’s Edge: Adventure Awaits dives into the process of creating our beloved Batuu. With a star-studded cast (Neil Patrick Harris, John Boyega, Jay Leno, and more), we’re eager to catch more behind the scenes looks into Disney Imagineering building Galaxy’s Edge. Expect a more light-hearted and slightly advertisement forward tone in this feature, but a walkthrough tour of Batuu from the couch is too magical to pass up!
Friday, August 14th: The Greatest Showman
Lots of Disney fans slept on The Greatest Showman…you shouldn’t! The movie’s a surprisingly fun ride through the world of P.T. Barnum. There are highs, there are lows, there are a whole lotta singing and dancing numbers. Plus, who can’t use a little more quality time with Hugh Jackman? Catch this one on Disney Plus starting August 14th.
Ant Man and the Wasp
While Ant Man and the Wasp may not stack up as our favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe pick, we’re happy anytime an Avenger appears in our watchlist. The storyline told here is critical to the Avengers story arc, and Paul Rudd’s banter with Evangeline Lilly will make you smile. Sure the plot may feel a bit…squishy…but there’s more than enough adrenaline-fueled fight scenes to make Ant Man and the Wasp a popcorn muncher pick for your August queue.
Friday, August 21st: Beauty and the Beast
August 21st can’t come soon enough! We’ve been dying for a rewatch of the 2017 live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. Nerd fans around the world squeed with delight when the casting of Emma Watson as Belle was announced, and her performance didn’t disappoint. The movie is a solid update to the animated classic and even includes a few fun surprises. Be on the look for Josh Gad (aka Olaf) as Gaston’s sidekick and prepare yourself for serious laughs whenever he appears on the screen.
